Things to do on the Isle of Purbeck

Stansfield Holiday Cottage Local Area

The area is referred to as THE ISLE OF PURBECK which is a peninsular on the coast of Dorset.

Stansfield Holiday Home is ideally located to explore all the attractions in this scenic part of Dorset. Here are some of the many things to see and do.

Clavell Tower, Kimmeridge Fossil Fossil

KIMMERIDGE BAY

Is on the Smedmore Estate and the bay forms part of the Jurassic Coast a world heritage site. The whole area is of scientific interest for its geological structure. The area is renowned for its fossils with The Etches Collection in the village displaying fossils found by Steve Etches in the area over a 30 year period.

LULWORTH COVE and DURDLE DOOR

The cove on the Jurassic Coast is one of the world's finest examples of such a landform and is a World Heritage site getting many visitors each year. It is close to the rock arch of Durdle Door which is a natural limestone arch. The landscapes around this area have been used in several films including - to name a few: Wilde (Stephen Fry) Nanny McPhee (Emma Thompson) Far from the Madding Crowd, the Bollywood film Housefull and several Doctor Who episodes.

The scenery from the cliffs around these two areas is absolutely stunning.

TYNEHAM & WORBARROW BAY

This coastal village of Tyneham became a ghost town when it was abandoned in 1943 to enable the armed forces to use it as a training ground in the second world war. It was never returned to the residents and in 2014 the civil parish was abolished and merged with nearby Steeple to form Steeple with Tyneham.
There is a church and original school house to visit but still being on the army reserve they control visiting to week end and national holidays.

Twenty minutes-walk further on you will be met by the sweeping beauty of Worbarrow bay, outmatched by the awesome sweep of time caught in its geology of limestone and chalk.

DURLSTON CASTLE & COUNTRY PARK

Few places in Britain equal Durlston: its special qualities stem from a combination of geography, geology, history and careful management which has created a mosaic of nationally important wildlife habitats: sea-cliffs, downs, ancient meadows, hedgerows, woodland, and dry-stone walls each with their characteristic plants and animals.

Very fine clay in suspension in the water diffracts light in different ways, producing a spectrum of colour - sometimes green, sometimes turquoise. Sandy paths lead up steps to views of the Purbeck Hills or down steps to the water's edge.
